AP PHOTOS: Art Basel Hong Kong returns after pandemic hiatus
Art Basel Hong Kong, one of Asia’s leading art fairs, is back in a slimmer form after a hiatus brought on by COVID-19.
About 100 galleries from 23 countries are participating, half the pre-pandemic level, and more are joining via online viewing rooms. The show runs until Sunday.
Adeline Ooi, Asia Director of Art Basel, described the event as the organization’s first hybrid show. A constant stream of visitors, all wearing masks, browsed the works at a cavernous convention center as buyers’ representatives used smartphones on selfie sticks to zoom in on specific pieces for overseas buyers.
Last year, Art Basel was canceled as the pandemic took hold. The viral situation has stabilized in Hong Kong and vaccines are gradually reaching a larger part of the population.
